The first level Braidotti distinguishes is the difference between men and women. It contains a critique, initiated fifty years ago by Simone de Beauvoir in The Second Sex, of Man as the universal signifier and the devalorization of women as other, as non-man. At the same time, moreover, the analysis on this level seeks to redefine sexual difference in terms of positivity and to elaborate alternative forms of female subjectivity. Level two, then, refers to the differences among women.
