4 The Compensator In polarization microscopy, birefringent material may be used to modify elliptically polarized light as it emerges from birefringent samples including magnetic samples. For this purpose a transparent birefringent plate of suitable thickness and material is placed in the ray path emerging from the specimen. The plate allows to change the path difference between the two mutually orthogonal vibration directions of the elliptical wave (see Fig. 4). Such a device is called a compensator, as its function is to compensate phase differences.
