Bari became involved in Central American politics and at one point even enlisted Sweeney to help her raise money to buy tractors to send to the Sandinistas. The couple decided that with a new baby, they should try to patch up their crumbling relationship. They planned to leave Sonoma and began house-hunting in rural Mendocino County to make a new start. They purchased a partially developed site in Redwood Valley, moving there in November of 1986. Bari and Sweeney hosted a goodbye party in the back yard of their Santa Rosa house.
They were represented by Susan Brandt, then a rookie attorney, who went on to become a well-known environmental attorney in California. Apparently Sweeney and Bari didn’t understand that they would be personally liable if they should lose the case. They did, and were assessed $12,000 in court costs. Though there had been twelve others involved as plaintiffs, most of them didn’t own property like Sweeney. The court ruled that Hewlett-Packard could assess the plaintiffs individually. Sweeney’s response to this turn of events won grudging praise from Bari.
Davis later commented on Bari’s devotion as a mother and how her behavior with her girls contrasted so clearly with the short shrift she often gave people in the Movement whom she found tiresome or stupid: “She could be offensive and abrupt. She wasn’t particularly patient with anyone who wasn’t smart. You know there are a lot of airheads out there. She tended to be tough and she was impatient with what she viewed as softness. But she was very tender with her children. ” EVEN BEFORE THEY GOT MARRIED, in 1981, Sweeney and Bari were operating as a political team.
